Animal replicas, such as this coyote, can keep unwanted pests out of yards.

Pest-control tips

  • Remove brush piles, wood and tree stumps. Woody areas are the preferred habitat for animals such as raccoons and possums, according to Pincuspy.
  • Add latticework or hardware mesh to the bottom of sheds and decks. Pincuspy recommends leaving a small opening so animals won't be trapped. Put baby powder around the opening, check at night to see if there are tracks leaving the enclosure and then close the opening. This will prevent unwanted smells from carcasses.
  • Put a stop to foragers by using trash bins with tight-fitting lids or by using bungee cords to secure lids. If the garbage is continually being knocked over secure the bin to a rack or post.
  • Frighten some unwanted animals with dogs, but Pincuspy warns that raccoons can be fierce and may attack a curious pet.
  • Use non-toxic, biodegradable chemicals to create bad smells or tastes that will keep animals from returning to lawns and gardens.

  • Grow plants that are naturally distasteful to animals.

Bird-control tips

  • Install gutter screens, which help keep the leaves out and birds from nesting. Be sure to keep all gutters flush and tight to the home.
  • Mount plastic spikes along window sills and awnings to keep birds from perching. If the problem persists there is more sophisticated roof netting to help repel them.
  • Drive birds away with high-tech electronic systems that use sounds that scare or warn birds to keep a distance.
  • Help keep birds under control by using scarecrows such as coyote replicas.

The promise of warmer weather, flowers and green grass aren't the only things that come with spring. An increase in raccoon, possum, pigeon and rodent nuisances is something that many homeowners dread as the summer months near.

"In Chicago, the spring is really when it really hits because a lot of the birds return from warmer climates," Joe Seid said. Seid is the owner of Bird-X Inc. a Chicago company that specializes in bird control.

Unwanted animal pests can destroy plants,  can scatter garbage and can leave an unsightly fecal mess.

There is no exceptionally effective deterrent because animals can adjust, according to Steve Pincuspy, a program associate at the Safer Pest Control Project.

"Be aware of your home and what animals you have around," said Tom Tiddens, director of plant health care at the Chicago Botanic Garden.  He suggests spraying repellents early.

"Try to do it before they even get a taste," Tiddens said.

Seid said that with certain products an animal’s behavior can be modified so it is not a constant annoyance.
