Coyote Silhouette Decoys Scare Geese at Municipal Harbors

The Escanaba Municipal Harbor is using coyotes to help control its geese problem. Throughout the harbor, coyotes can be seen keeping watch over the geese. They're only cardboard cut-outs, but they're doing the job.

More than a hundred geese call the harbor home, but with the coyote cut-outs, they stay primarily in the water. When on land, the birds leave behind a mess, which can be a headache for those who use the marina for recreation. Officials say the coyotes are the easiest way to take care of the problem.

"We looked into other alternatives as far as shooting off something that they call "boomers" that would make them fly away and other things like that," says Director of Parks and Recreation Tom Penegor. "But that also effects people in the area when they hear a large sound like that."

From a distance, the coyotes appear so real that several residents have called animal control since they've been in use.

Repel Geese with a Fake Coyote Replica

A couple of weeks ago I ordered some coyote decoys for a friend of mine named Steve who does not have Internet service. He is the golf pro/manager of a country club located here in the Phoenix area. He had approximately 400 geese residing at the golf course because of the ponds and the regulations that we have to be humane to them. He put the decoys up and has moved them periodically like the instructions said and all but 6 are GONE!!!!! He is absolutely thrilled. Both of us wanted to be sure that you knew the coyote replica was wonderful and totally works. The six that are left reside on the opposite side of a pond where the golfers never go.

He says that the golfers are commenting that the goose “poop” is gone and they are happy to bring their business back to his course. The really funny thing is there are neighboring courses that have called him asking if the had a bird problem. GUESS where the geese all went!! He is just chuckling and told them that he clapped his arms and the birds all left. He is afraid of his wonderful secret getting out. I personally drive past another golf course on my way to work everyday and have never seen geese there until this past week. I bet a flock of 400 had to split up to several courses and all go somewhere!!
